About API Steel Line Pipes

Line pipe is manufactured mostly form high-strength carbon steel, and is made to strict engineering and metallurgical specifications developed by the American Petroleum Institute (API).

One particular standard, API Specification 5L, defines requirements for pipe made to transport natural gas, oil and water. This specification includes standards for the dimensional, physical, mechanical, and chemical properties of the carbon steel. Pipe mills produce 2 types of line pipe: Seamless and Welded.

However, in fact, most pipes produced for interstate natural gas pipelines are the welded type, because interstate systems require larger diameter pipe. The diameter for seamless line pipe is very limited form 3 inches to 24 inches. But welded line pipe can give more choices when it comes to larger sizes, which contains ERW pipe, LSAW pipe, and SSAW pipe with diameter 1 1/2 to 100 inches.
